Why Christianity? Good, Beautiful, True

Why should one consider Christianity?[1] Because it is good, beautiful, and true. Much could be said about each of these, but briefly, here are some reasons for each.

Good

Christianity is good because:[2]

1. People are transformed by Jesus Christ for the better.[3]

2. Christianity brings the sanctification of human life as all people are made in God’s image (cf. Gen 1:26). From the beginning of life to its end. Ending infanticide, the abandonment and exposure of unwanted babies, abortion, and fatal violence.

3. Christianity elevates sexual morality: upholding marriage and discouraging promiscuity, fornication, adultery, prostitution, pederasty, homosexuality, orgies, and bestiality.

4. Through Christ, women receive freedom and dignity. Christianity views both men and women as made in God’s image and so, historical has been a force to elevate women.

5. Christians bring charity and compassion, seeing all people as valuable, and so extends love and care to orphans, the poor, the elderly, and any in need.

6. The Christian roots of hospitals and health care, not just for those deemed of economic worth, but to all.

7. Christianity’s imprint on education: for both sexes, free schooling for all classes, including the invention of sign language to help the deaf, and the Braille system of raised dots to train the blind to touch-read.

8. Labor and economic freedom grew out of the Christian work ethic that saw God, the creator, as a worker and humanity made in his image to work and care for creation.

9. Science was greatly developed by Christians and is underpinned by Christian presuppositions.

10. Christianity brought liberty and justice for all. No one is considered above the law, not the rich, nor the powerful. The advancement of natural law and natural rights. The equality of all individuals.

11. Slavery was abolished as a Christian achievement. There is one race, the human race, and all people, from all ethnicities are made in the image of God.

12. Christianity’s stamp on art and architecture.

13. The sound of music: Its Christian resonance.

14. The hallmarks of literature: Their Christian imprint.

Beautiful

Christianity is beautiful because:

1. God is the greatest possible being, and is the standard of axiology (value both morally and aesthetically).

2. He is maximally excellent. Of which there could be none greater. The most valuable thing beyond even the whole universe.

3. God is love. He is not merely loving but is in the grounding, source, and embodiment of love.

4. Christianity offers the promise of forgiveness. There is grace for the things we have done wrong.

5. Christianity provides the hope of eternal life. Death is conquered and is not the end. There is life forevermore in Christ.

6. Christianity is the assurance of a new creation. The earth and the universe will be restored and made new.

7. Christianity gives our best life now. This does not mean instant gratification, a peace through the troubles of this world, and true joy that surpasses understanding. Living as a Christian is not only hope for heaven, but is the chance to follow in Christ’s steps and live life to the full now, to grow in virtue to be able to respond in love when scorned.

8. Christianity brings human flourishing as God always intended.

9. The beatific vision: the promise that one day, believers will experience supreme, perfect happiness by seeing God face-to-face.

10. Christianity is the foundation for meaning and purpose in life.

11. Christianity promises reunion with loved ones, no matter what happens.

12. Christianity offers reconciliation with God and our fellow brothers and sisters.

14. Christianity promises a relationship with God. The greatest being ever wants to know you.

True

Christianity is true because:

1. God is the best explanation why anything at all exists.

2. …of the origin of the universe.

3. …of the applicability of mathematics to the physical world.

4. … of the fine-tuning of the universe for intelligent life.

5. …of intentional states of consciousness.

6. …of objective moral values and duties.

7. The very possibility of God’s existence implies that God exists.

8. God can be personally known and experienced. [4]

9. The Bible is trustworthy.[5]

10. Jesus’ resurrection is historically probable.[6]

11. Christianity makes sense of evil.[7]

12. The Christian worldview makes sense of life.[8]
